Writing Essays With Essay Quotations
Writing Essays With Essay QuotationsIf you are an English major at a college or university, you may have noticed that you are required to write a thesis statement and essay quotations by the end of your freshman year. When you are writing your essay, you should always keep in mind that you should always be quoting other people. So, what is it that makes this possible? For one thing, the English Department at your school has never heard of 'original source.' Their system is to assign you several quotations to use, and then the professors decide which quotes they feel work well for your essays. In fact, some college administrators actually think that they are rewriting an original report! The idea of having a great quote is to place the professor in a position where he or she is forced to pick a quote from someone, or even to pick one from a list, because of its overwhelming impact on the topic. But that is exactly what is happening with those dreaded essay quotations! Of course, if you are constantly writing about other people's quotes, they may eventually realize what you are doing and choose one of their own quotes to write about. To make things worse, the university's English department seems to be obsessed with putting quotations at the end of the essay that no one would ever say. You see, they insist that you should use 'some other great quote' instead of 'my last day at college.' The reason why this is so important is because of the way our speech patterns tend to create a specific time and place for certain types of quotations.Think about it: you do not think of a 'my last day at college' quotation, but the reader does. Think about the best way to make a statement in front of many different types of readers: you should use a quote that will be familiar to all the readers. That is why you should always be referring back to the 'original sources' that you choose. If you cannot find a great quote from someone, ask your professors if you can use one that is relev ant to the subject at hand. When you refer back to the actual quote in question, you will be able to pinpoint exactly what the quote was in the context. When you use your own quotations, you may find yourself repeating them without knowing it.Speaking of not knowing it, most people tend to either outright misinterpret quotes that they use as the main source, or simply do not understand what a great quote is. When you read an essay that is filled with quotes, you may be completely lost as to what you should be thinking about! When you are working in this way, it is easy to misquote. No matter how prepared you are for your final exams, you will almost always need to quote a famous writer, movie, song, or anything else. Many students, who do not have any background in writing, cannot handle this. But if you know how to use quotations properly, you can use them every time you want to.
